Verboden ~ Forbidden

For me this is a word that translates very easy for me. Verboden… Forbidden. Usually seen where people don’t want you to drive or park. But it also reminds me of a time in The Netherlands when many things were Verboden to the Jewish people of their communities. Such a horrible time in history but have people actually learned the ultimate lesson of life? I find it sad to see many in life that are Verboden to do things in their communities around the world.

Uit ~ Out

This is a great word to know if you ever want to exit the highway or leave someplace. Uit means out or to go from. By the way…. In Germany the exits all say.. Ausfarht, which always gets a big laugh from our guests from the States.

Tot Ziens ~ Good Bye

Tot ziens is one way the Dutch people say good bye to each other. Doei and daag can also mean good bye in a less formal sense.

This is a word I’m not looking forward to using soon. Yes, my time in The Netherlands has come to an end. Final preparations and packing up our family to move back to the United States of America have already begun.

I will not end here because I still have one more week to hug all my friends before I have to say tot ziens, something I’ve been not looking forward to for a long time.

Stroopwaffles ~ Syrup Waffles

A delicious Dutch delight that began in the early 1800’s in Gouda, The Netherlands. Gerard Kamphuisen is given credit for inventing the Stroopwaffel ussing left over breadcrumbs from his bakery and sweetening them with syrup. He took the dough and rolled it into a ball and pressed them into a waffle press. Then sliced the waffle open, sweetened it with syrup. Putting the two halves back together glues the stroopwaffle together.

My favorite way to enjoy a stroopwaffle… place the stroopwaffle over a hot cup of coffee… this melts the syrup and softens the waffle. Mmmmmm lekker!!!
